Load Flow Analysis

Load Flow Analysis in Power System Utilities is an important exercise to be performed to ensure that
  • Generation supplies the demand (load) plus losses.
  • Bus voltage magnitudes remain close to rated values
  • Generation operates within specified real and reactive power limits
  • Transmission lines and transformers are not overloaded.


The Power flow study (also known as load-flow study) is an important tool involving numerical analysis applied to a power system.

Unlike traditional circuit analysis, a power flow study usually uses simplified notation such as a one-line diagram and per-unit system, and focuses on various forms of AC power (ie: reactive, real, and apparent) rather than voltage and current. It analyzes the power systems in normal steady-state operation.

A Load Flow Study specifically investigates the following:

  • Busbar voltages
  • Effect of rearranging circuits and incorporating new circuits on system loading.
  • Effect of injecting in-phase and quadrature boost voltages on system loading.
  • Optimum system running conditions and load distribution.
  • Optimum system losses.
  • Optimum rating and tap range of transformers.


There exist a number of software implementations of power flow studies.
In addition to a power flow study itself, sometimes called the base case, many software implementations perform other types of analysis, such as short-circuit fault analysis and economic analysis. In particular, some programs use linear programming to find the optimal power flow, the conditions which give the lowest cost per kilowatt generated.

With a typical Load Flow Software, you can create and validate your system model with ease and obtain accurate and reliable results.  Software calculates bus voltages, branch power factors, currents and power flows throughout the electrical system. It typically allows for swing, voltage regulated, and unregulated power sources with multiple power grids and generator connections.

It is capable of performing analysis on both radial and loop systems. It allows you to select from several different methods in order to achieve the best calculation efficiency and accuracy.
The great importance of power flow or load-flow studies is in the planning the future expansion of power systems as well as in determining the best operation of existing systems.
